In-year

‘In-year admission’ is the term used for application for entry into a school at any time other than joining in the September of Year 7 under the co-ordinated admission scheme.

Those seeking places in Year 7

Anyone other than those who took the 11+ for admission during the previous year and was unsuccessful may approach the school to apply for admission at any time.  We provide honest advice about numbers on roll, the likelihood of a place becoming available, and information about the appeals process should there be no places available.  If parents still wish to apply then arrangements are made either for the 11+ papers to be sent to the child’s current school (if, for example, they are living overseas), or for them to attend Carre’s Grammar School to sit the tests. The students would sit two papers as if they had taken them with the rest of the cohort; these would normally be taken a week apart but arrangements are made to suit the parents, student and the school.

If the child is already of Year 7 school age, an alternative test – a Cognitive Ability Test (CAT) – will be used.  Please see information below.

Those seeking places in year groups other than Year 7

Students seeking places in year groups other than Year 7 will be tested using Cognitive Ability Testing (CAT) which comprises four tests; Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative and Spatial Reasoning.  These all take place on the same day and take approximately one and a half hours to complete with breaks between each paper.  As with 11+ papers, these can be sent to the child’s current school, or be taken at Carre’s.  The papers are sent away for external marking for students in all year groups and results can take up to 10 working days.  The standardised results indicate if a child is in the top 25% of the ability range nationally.

For both the 11+ and Cognitive Ability Test, if the outcome indicates that a student is in the top 25% of the ability range and the school is below its PAN, a place will be offered (the parent will still have to make an application via their Local Authority). If the school is unable to offer a place, parents will be informed of their right to seek an independent appeal against the decision not to admit.
