The ICT department at Carre's Grammar School is situated in a specialist ICT Suite fully air conditioned and equipped with, 32 desktop computers, a laser printer and multimedia projector.



The department is well resourced with both software and textbooks and aims to teach the use of software as it is used in a real world environment. This work is supported by a modern network run on a Microsoft Server 2008 domain and utilising Microsoft Windows 7 workstations.  The department teaches the in-depth use of the Microsoft Office Suite, alongside Adobe Design Premium CS4, Terrapin Logo and Flowol 4 Control Software. Scratch, and Python.  In addition, we have 10 Raspberry Pi’s the computer suite with a view to developing computer control and Robotics programming.

Key Stage 3 Condensed into years 7 and 8

The department aims to provide a solid foundation in the use of computers, which provides core skills that are then used in other subject areas. All pupils receive 2 hours of discrete ICT lessons per week in Year 7, and 1 hour per week in Years 8. By the end of Key Stage 3 all pupils are taught to be familiar and competent in the use of the full Microsoft Office Suite of software, to have designed and manipulated systems using control software and to have a basic understanding of social issues regarding the use of computers.

In year 9 students are enrolled on the European Computer Driving License (ECDL). This is a level 2 course (GCSE equivalent) and is widely considered to be the preferred qualification of industry. Testing is performed online, and students need to pass 4 modules to obtain the accreditation.  The ECDL is now graded Distinction* - Pass and is a level 2 course carrying QCA points scores

Key Stage 4

GCSE Computing – OCR

Introduced in 2012 GCSE computing is split into three sections.  
Theoretical knowledge, which is examined with a terminal exam.
Practical investigation, 20 hour controlled assessment
Programming Task – 20 Hour Controlled assessment.

Main programming language learnt is Python along with elements of BASIC.  Theory covers aspects of relational databases, Binary, Hexadecimal, Logic Gates. Hardware, Software, Networks etc.
